‘The Snow Maiden’ charms Lancaster student

Using acrobatics, dance, mime and clowning rather than spoken dialogue, two actors from Synetic Theater in Arlington told a magical story of hope and friendship to students at the Lancaster Elementary School (LES) Theater December 1. “The Snow Maiden,” based on the 19th-century Russian folktale “Snegurochka” by Alexander Ostrovsky, was brought to Kilmarnock as part of the Arts for Youth Program of the Rappahannock Foundation for the Arts (RFA).

In two separate shows, the actors took virtually all the school’s 548 students, kindergarten through seventh grade, on a musical adventure that started in a snow-covered mountain forest, where a lonely boy hopes for a friend, reported RFA assistant producer Peter Porteous. On Christmas morning, he builds a companion from snow, a Snow Maiden. In the night, she comes to life and….
