KILMARNOCK—Theresa Elizabeth Coogan “Terri” Larsen departed this life on Pentecost Sunday, May 28, 2023, following a tragic fall at home. She was 71.

Terri was an Army brat born on Ft. Devens, Mass., on April 25, 1952. She was the second daughter born to Lt. Col. Vincent F. Coogan and Mrs. Kathryn Devine Coogan, both of Albany, N.Y. Terri had three sisters and a brother who with their mother and Army father traveled widely in the U.S. on assignments typical for an infantry officer. They had one unique overseas posting in the early 60s to HQ, USARSO, Ft. Amador, Canal Zone, Panama.

With many prior academic accomplishments to her credit, Terri earned a BA majoring in foreign language instruction at Longwood College, Farmville. Terri, was a Longwood Lady in every respect. Upon graduation, she set her sights on becoming a Spanish teacher in Virginia.

Later after gaining teaching experience, she decided on another path and added computer systems hardware and language training to her resume. Terri enjoyed a long and rewarding career working for various companies as a computer application and database programmer. She finished her career working for the Airline Pilots Association -ALPA at their Dupont Circle and Herndon locations.

In retirement, she gave of her time and talents for over 10 years as a blue jacket wearing INOVA Hospital systems volunteer, eagerly helping others in need.

Since the early 90s, she developed a great appreciation for the countryside, water and people of the Northern Neck, first as visitor, then resident, boater and fisherman!

She led a full life to include adventurous travel, culminating in her great western states tour of 2019. She traveled extensively in the UK, London to Scotland, by car and back. From Alabama to Florida, to Maine, N.Y. from upstate to “The End” of that Long Island; west to Chicago, Glacier NP, Libby MT, Seattle and Anacortes, Wash., Victoria BC and north, cruising to Alaska.

Raised with a Catholic schools education until college, Terri experienced a reawakening of her faith during a long rehabilitation following a stroke in 2005. Within her readings and abundant writings, she gave witness to a deep faith, only revealed to a very few in her shy and quiet way.

She was a parishioner at All Saints Catholic Church in Manassas for nearly three decades, and donated significantly to the construction of the new church on that site. She leaves behind many, many friends, heartbroken over her passing.

Well-churched on weekends in the Northern Neck, this pretty lady with a cane frequented the Saturday vigil services at St. Francis DeSales Catholic Church, Kilmarnock. Attending her was her devoted and lucky husband, always happy to carry her purse for her.

She also attended Sunday services at nearby Bluff Point United Methodist Church. Sharing in hymns at a vintage piano, with an equally vintage piano player, she was warmly welcomed into this devoted Christian community. Deepening her faith still further and gathering more good friends besides.

Terri was fortunate to attend two ladies Bible study groups a week in Kilmarnock, always accompanied by her Bible study buddy and good neighbor, Mrs. Shelia Dize. Her family owes this gracious lady and her husband their gratitude for helping to expand Terri’s social horizons beyond her limitations, and for loving care—the kind only reserved for a daughter.

If there exists on-high a prep school for angels, Terri is already in class and likely setting a new standard for style therein!

Our many friends are invited to share some moments with her at her Visitation, from 5-7 p.m. Monday, June 19, at Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock. Her graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 20, at St. Francis DeSales cemetery.

Her family thanks Pierce and Currie Funeral Homes for their understanding and service at this difficult time.
