IRVINGTON—Richard Edwin Patteson passed March 7, 2023, at his home surrounded by the love of family. Born August 31, 1949, he was the third child of six children born to USAF COL. Harry Owen Patteson of Richmond and Miriam Allene Jones of Monterey.
As the son of an Air Force pilot, “Dick” spent his childhood stationed at Air Force bases in California, Italy, Virginia and Hawaii. He graduated dean’s list from the University of Richmond in 1971 with a bachelor’s in accounting and a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity and an Alpha Kappa Psi Honorary. He went on to obtain his CPA license and had an extensive career in bank audit that ended with a senior examiner position at the Federal Reserve Bank in Richmond.
In retirement Dick, an avid sports fan, supported many athletic programs at the University of Richmond. He played volleyball with the Richmond Volleyball Club and enjoyed traveling to watch professional sports.
In 2021, he moved to the Northern Neck of Virginia where he had friends and family roots. Dick quickly became involved in local activities beginning with a guest DJ spot with local radio station WNND 103.9 FM. He LOVED all kinds of music and did several “music” cruises each year that celebrated great artists of the past.
Dick also generously offered his time helping his sister, Jean, manage the Old Farm Truck Market in White Stone. He joined sister Nan playing bridge with the Northern Neck Duplicate Bridge Club and enjoyed spending time with friends in the area. Dick organized the annual Patteson family beach trips for over 40 years and is fondly known as “Mr. Beach.”
A devoted son, a loving brother, a loyal friend, Dick will be forever missed.
He is survived by brother, Harry O. Patteson Jr. (Caroline); sister, Nan Patteson Larson (Jack); sister, Nina P. Brooks; brother, Tom W. Patteson (Robin); sister, Jean Patteson Price (Paul); and a large loving group of nieces, nephews and their children.
A Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held at Saint Mary’s White Chapel Labrinth in Lively, at 10 a.m. August 26.
In lieu of flowers please send donations to the Upper Lancaster Volunteer Rescue Squad.
