Thomas A. Applewhite Jr.

BON AIR—Thomas Allen Applewhite Jr., 88, of Bon Air died January 11, 2018.

He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Lynette Talley Applewhite.

He is survived by their two sons and families, all of Richmond, Thomas Daniel Applewhite, daughter-in-law Julie Rimmer Applewhite and grandchildren Thomas Harding Applewhite and Talley Belk Applewhite; and Hunter Ashton Applewhite, daughter-in-law Katherine Shield Applewhite and grandson Ashton Pevensey Applewhite. Other survivors include brother- and sister-in-law Irving L. and Rhea Frances Talley of Wicomico Church; and several nieces and nephews and their families.

Born March 5, 1929, in Richmond to Charlotte Harding Applewhite and Thomas Allen Applewhite Sr., he grew up in Westover Hills and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1948. He enrolled at Randolph-Macon College as part of the Class of 1952 and was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity.

His undergraduate studies were interrupted to serve in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was stationed in Japan as part of the Quartermaster Corps of the Far East Command.

Returning to Richmond, he completed his undergraduate degree at Randolph-Macon in 1955 and earned a master’s from the College of William & Mary in 1961.

His professional career was spent in education in Chesterfield County and the City of Richmond public school systems where he served for 35 years, including as assistant principal at Manchester High School, principal at Thompson Middle School, and social studies teacher at Providence Middle School.

With his wife and sons, he was a dedicated member of Crestwood Presbyterian Church where he served as both deacon and youth group leader.

For many years during his retirement, he indulged his love of American history as a volunteer tour guide and re-enactor at historic St. John’s Church. Some of his most contented hours were spent quail and dove hunting with his English setters, boating on the rivers of the Northern Neck and plowing his expansive vegetable garden seated atop his Farmall tractor at Hollygrove, his Bon Air home.

He forever will be remembered as a dutiful son, loving and devoted husband and a patient and selfless father.

A graveside service will be held Monday, January 22. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Randolph-Macon College, P.O. Box 5005, Ashland, VA  23005.
