CHERRY POINT—Travers Mitchell “Sonny” Dobyns Jr. passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at the age of 88 at his home in Cherry Point, now Lottsburg.
Travers was preceded in death by his wife, Edna; his parents, Travers and Kathryn Dobyns; and his sister, Kathryn Mountcastle (Bill).
He is survived by his nephew, Thomas “Tom” Mountcastle of Lottsburg; his nieces, Kathryn “Kaki” Light of Lottsburg, Anne Johnson of Easton, Md., and Susan Maxwell, of Sherwood, Md.; his sisters-in-law, Betty Gay Jones and Gilda Turner (Pete); his brother-in-law, Wade Crowder; and his beloved dog, Buddy.
Travers will be remembered for his kind and gentle way, his mischievous nature and his willingness to help anybody any time.
A graveside service was held Saturday, July 26, at Melrose Methodist Church Cemetery in Lottsburg.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Melrose Methodist Building Fund, P.O. Box 150, Lottsburg, VA 22511.
The family would like to thank his caregivers, Lisa Muse, Eunice Harris, Angela Jones, Daislyn Allison and Betty Dunaway for the great care given over the years. And special thanks to Jennifer, Kathleen and Joni of the Riverside Hospice team for their compassionate care.
