Mathews movie

“Happy Homes and Fertile Farms on Smiling Waters,” written and produced in 1999 in Mathews by the late Eugene C. Hudgins will be shown Friday, July 12, at the Mathews Museum, 200 Main Street, Mathews. Doors will open at 6 p.m., followed by welcome/remarks at 6:15 p.m. and viewing at 6:30 p.m.

The showing is free and open to the public. Reservations are not required. Coles Hudgins will share stories of his father’s production of the movie.

Genealogical society meeting

The Middle Peninsula African-American Genealogical and Historical Society will hold its monthly meeting virtually at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 13. Lydia Neuroth, manager for the Virginia Untold project at the Library of Virginia will present “New and Upcoming Projects from Virginia Untold.”

KGC meeting

While gardens struggle to survive the heat and drought, the Kilmarnock Garden Club (KGC) will watch a presentation called Garden Envy shared by Anne Olsen of the Northern Neck Master Gardeners.

Beautiful garden spaces here and abroad come about with knowledge, experience and design ideas. Visitors are welcome to join KGC at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, in the Fellowship Hall at Kilmarnock Baptist Church, 65 East Church Street, Kilmarnock.

Annual meeting

The Northumberland Public Library board of trustees will hold its annual meeting at 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, at NPL, 7204 Northumberland Highway, Heathsville.

The board will review a strategic plan. Anyone interested in learning more about this organization is welcome to attend.

Bingo night

Summer Daze Bingo Night to support The Haven Shelter & Services will be held July 19 at the Callao Volunteer Fire Department, 314 Northumberland Highway, Callao. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the game will start at 7 p.m.

There will be prizes for each of 10 games plus a bonus prize. Tickets are $15 each, including a seat and three cards. Additional cards are $3 each. Purchase tickets by noon July 17 at The Haven Administrative Office, 102 Walnut Street, Warsaw, or havenshelter.org/bingo.

Family reunion

The descendants of Dandridge W. and Naomi Bush Cockrell will hold their 40th family reunion July 20 at the Blaine Center in Lively. Descendants are urged to contact the family at cows1956@gmail.com. Put “Family Reunion” in the subject line and name the known descendants and relatives.

First Africans

The fourth annual First Africans Day at Stratford Hall will return July 27 to commemorate the enslaved Africans and African Americans who built and sustained Stratford Hall and the Lee family for generations.

Throughout the day descendants, historical interpreters and artists will gather with the public to remember and honor those once enslaved at Stratford Hall through music, art, dancing and storytelling. Chicken dinners

Chicken dinners will be available from 5-6:30 p.m. on first Mondays at American Legion Post #117, 39 School Street, Reedville.

Meals include fried chicken, mashed potatoes, choice of vegetables, salad, roll, dessert and drink. Dinners are $12 for adults and $6 for children ages 12 and younger, at the door.
