Rwanda talk

White Stone resident Katherine Cassidy will give a talk with slides, “Rwanda as a Place of Peace,” at 3 p.m. August 24, at Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury, 132 Lancaster Drive, Irvington.

Cassidy will reflect on her recent three weeks in the African country in June. She traveled there as a volunteer with the USAID-supported program, Farmer-to-Farmer. Non-residents who wish to attend are asked to call Cassidy in advance, 450-1031.

Pre-auditions

The Westmoreland Players plans to present The Addams Family musical February 14 through March 20, 2025. To prepare for the vocal singing portion of the auditions, rehearsal workshops are slated from 2-7 p.m. September 8 and 15. Auditions will be held October 4-6.

Anyone interested in auditioning should visit westmorelandplayers.org and complete the sign-up form. The deadline to submit the form is August 28.

Chicken dinners

Chicken dinners will be available from 5-6:30 p.m. on first Mondays at American Legion Post #117, 39 School Street, Reedville.

Meals include fried chicken, mashed potatoes, choice of vegetables, salad, roll, dessert and drink. Dinners are $12 for adults and $6 for children ages 12 and younger, at the door.

Beach music

The Colonial Beach Community Foundation on September 14 will host the sixth annual Northern Neck Beach Music Festival in the Town of Colonial Beach on September 14. Bands will include Feature Attraction, Motown Butta returning, plus Band of Oz.

Advance tickets are available at www.givebutter.com/nnbeachmusic2024 for $35 each. After August 31, the ticket price goes up to $45. The event is rain or shine. Guests are urged to bring a chair. No outside food or beverages. Party tent rentals are available at beachmusiccbva@gmail.com.

Wine & Whiskers

Garfield’s Rescue Inc. will hold Wine & Whiskers from 5-7:30 p.m. September 5 at Trinity Episcopal Church Pavilion, 8484 Mary Ball Road, Lancaster. The event will offer wine, hors d’oeuvres, music by Paragon DJ, a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle.

Tickets are $50. Purchase tickets at Bayside Animal Hospital, 78 Whisk Drive, White Stone; FNCAS Thrift Shop 80 Jessie duPont Memorial Highway, Burgess; RAL Art Center, 19 North Main Street, Kilmarnock; or www.garfieldsrescue.org. Proceeds support rescued homeless cats.

Crab feast

The Northumberland County Community Center, 679 Browns Store Road, Heathsville, will host a crab feast from 2-6 p.m. September 7. In addition to all-you-can-eat steamed crabs, the menu will include fried chicken, fried fish, hot dogs, hamburgers, corn on the cob, baked beans, homemade soups, tea and water.

Chamber music

The Northern Neck Orchestra (NNO) 2024-25 Chamber Music Series will open at 2 p.m. September 8 at Good Luck Cellars, 1025 Good Luck Road, Kilmarnock. The four-concert series will begin with “Music for Guitar Ensemble,” performed by the Tidewater Guitar Orchestra.

Season tickets for the four-concert series are $112. Single tickets for each concert are $35. Tickets may be purchased at northernneckorchestra.org or the door. Students are admitted free.

Boots and Barbecue

Boots and Barbecue to benefit Northern Neck Land Conservancy will be held from 1-4 p.m. September 28 at King Copsico Farm on the water in Westmoreland County.

The event features a barbecue buffet, music and exhibitors and demonstrations that reflect the rural character of the Northern Neck. Tickets are $50 each. To become a sponsor or purchase a ticket, visit nnconserve.org.

Black Tie & Boots

Black Tie & Boots will be held at 6 p.m. September 27, at State Fair of Virginia, Meadow Hall, Meadow Event Park, 13191 Dawn Boulevard, Doswell The gala offers dancing, dining, auctions and cocktails.

Gala tickets can be purchased at StateFairVa.org. Tickets are $150 per person through September 14. Proceeds will benefit youth through the State Fair of Virginia Scholarship Program.
