Quilt guild
The Rivah Quilt Guild will meet at 10 a.m. Friday, September 8, at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 435 East Church Street, Kilmarnock. Amy Sinibaldi of Williamsburg will discuss her career as a fabric designer, author and pattern designer.
Movie night
The Mathews Historical Society, 198 Main Street, Mathews, will host family movie night Friday, September 8. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the free movie, “A Voyage of Discovery,” will begin at 7 p.m.
Steamed crabs
The Morattico Waterfront Museum, 6584 Morattico Road, Morattico, will host the 12th annual crab feast from 4-6 p.m. Saturday, September 9. The menu will include all-you-can-eat steamed crabs, potato salad, pea salad, hot dogs, sodas and water. Beer and wine will be available for purchase.

ULVFD open house
The Upper Lancaster Volunteer Fire Department will hold a 75th anniversary open house from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, September 9 at the Lively Firehouse, 5170 Mary Ball Road, Lively.
There will be hot dogs and sodas; fun and games for the kids, a bounce house, firetruck rides, firehouse tours, a 9/11 tribute and a roll call of deceased members. Fifteen 75th anniversary t-shirts will be given away every hour from noon through 4 p.m.
Symposium
Stratford Hall, 483 Great House Road, Stratford, will host the Pitt, Peale & the Patriots Symposium from 1-7:30 p.m.Saturday, September 9. Speakers will focus on the historical context and significance of the Pitt portrait and commission, its political and art historical contents, and the art and value of its reproduction for Stratford Hall.
A reception and viewing of the William Pitt portrait will be held from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Inn at Montross, 21 Polk Street, Montross. Tickets are $30 general admission, $20, members, and $10, students. Register in advance at stratfordhall.org.
Chamber series
The Northern Neck Orchestra 2023-24 Chamber Music Series will open with Clarinet Trios, at 2 p.m. Sunday, September 10, at Good Luck Cellars, 1025 Goodluck Road, Kilmarnock.
Admission is by season subscription or $35, except February 3 and 4, $30 each. Tickets may be purchased at www.northernneckorchestra.org or at the check-in desk. Students are admitted free.
Corn maze
The Northern Neck Farm Museum, 12705 Northumberland Highway, Heathsville, will host a corn maze from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays and 1-4 p.m. Sundays through October 29, weather permitting.
The fee is $5 per person, $20 maximum per family; ages 3 and younger enter free. Closed-toe shoes are required.
Chorale season
Chesapeake Chorale rehearsals for 2023 Christmas concerts will begin at 7 p.m. Monday, September 11, at the White Stone Church of the Nazarene, 57 Whisk Drive, White Stone. From September 18 and each Monday until mid-November, rehearsals will be held from 7-9 p.m. at Grace Episcopal Church, 303 South Main Street, Kilmarnock.
Chicken dinners
Chicken dinners will be available from 5-6:30 p.m. on first Mondays at American Legion Post #117, 39 School Street, Reedville.
Meals include fried chicken, mashed potatoes, choice of vegetables, salad, roll, dessert and drink. Dinners are $12 for adults and $6 for children ages 12 and younger, at the door.
Women’s club
The Women’s Club of Northumberland County will gather at noon Tuesday, September 12, at the WCNC Clubhouse, 2829 Northumberland Highway, Lottsburg.
The meeting will begin at 12:30 p.m. Guests are welcome. Beverages and dessert are provided.
Crab festival
The Steamboat Era Museum will host the 12th annual Irvington Crab Festival from 4-8 p.m. September 16, at the Irvington Town Commons, 98 King Carter Drive, Irvington. The $75 admission includes all-you-can-eat steamed crabs, barbecue, hot dogs and soft drinks. Crabs will be served starting at 5 p.m. All other food and beverages will be available at 4 p.m. Beer and wine will be available for purchase for $5.

Native plants
The Northern Neck Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society (NNVNPS) will hold a Native Plant Sale September 16-23 at Dug In Farms, 155 Fleets Bay Road, White Stone.
From 9 a.m.-noon on both Saturdays, chapter members will answer questions and assist with picking the right plant for the right place. The chapter also will have the free 2022 third edition of “Native Plants of the Northern Neck” and other educational materials available for the public.
Wine & oysters
Stratford Hall, 483 Great House Road, Stratford, will host the annual Wine & Oyster Festival September 16 and 17. The festival will feature Virginia wineries, distilleries, oysters, food trucks, beer, artisan booths, music and car shows.
Early bird tasting tickets are $30 through September 14. Day of tickets will be $40. A non-tasting ticket is $20; ages 6-13, $10; and children younger than age 5, free. A two-day combo ticket is $50. Purchase early bird tickets at stratfordhall.org.
Dolley Madison
The Historic Christ Church & Museum Readers group will continue its study and discussion of America’s First Ladies at 9:30 a.m. September 19, in the Bayne Conference Room, Historic Christ Church, 420 Christ Church Road, Weems, and by Zoom. The discussion book will be A Perfect Union: Dolley Madison and the Creation of the American Nation, by Catherine Allgor.

Master Gardeners
The Northern Neck Master Gardeners 2024 Extension Master Gardener training will be held Tuesday and Thursday mornings, February 13-April 11 at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Heathsville.

Music on the Half Shell Stage
The Music on the Half Shell Stage concert series will continue from 7-9:30 p.m. September 22, at Town Centre Park, 150 North Main Street, Kilmarnock. Black Cat Murphy will cover rock and country hits.

Black Tie & Boots gala
The State Fair of Virginia will host the Black Tie & Boots gala at 6 p.m. September 22 at The Meadow Event Park’s Meadow Hall and lawn in Caroline County. Proceeds benefit scholarships. Admission to Black Tie & Boots is by advance purchase only.

State Fair

Raise the Roof
Historic Christ Church & Museum, 420 Christ Church Road, Weems, invites the community to its eighth annual “Raise the Roof” fall festival from 1-6 p.m. Saturday, September 23. The event will feature two bands, Virginia craft beer, wine, barbecue (or vegetarian fare) and homemade ice cream.

VWA crab feast
The Virginia Waterman’s Association (VWA) will hold an all-you-can-eat Crab Feast fundraiser from 3-6 p.m. September 23, at Buzzards Point Marina, 468 Buzzards Point Road, Reedville.
