About ferns

The Northern Neck Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society will offer a free Zoom presentation, “Getting to Know Virginia’s Ferns,” at 7 p.m. tonight, October 16. To sign in, email nnvnps@gmail.com.

The speaker will be Dr. Jordan Metzgar, curator of the Massey Herbarium at Virginia Tech.

Hunt Forum

John H. Hunt II Chesapeake History Forum will continue at 4 p.m. Saturday, October 18, at Historic Christ Church & Museum, 420 Christ Church Road, Weems. Kate Livie will present “Saltwater Showmen: The James Adams Floating Theater, 1914-1941.”

The event will feature an opening reception with fresh oysters, shrimp and handcrafted cocktails and a light supper will follow. Tickets are $100 per person or $175 per couple. Purchase tickets at ChristChurch1735.org or at the HCC&M office.

It’s magic

The Rappahannock Foundation for the Arts On Stage season will open Saturday, October 18, with The Magic of Michael Grandinetti. The show will begin at 7:30 p.m. at Lancaster Elementary School Theater, 191 School Street, Kilmarnock.

Admission is by season subscription, or $45. Purchase tickets at rappahannockfoundation.org, 438-5555 or the door.

Oyster roast

Shuckin’on the Lancaster Green will be held from 1-4 p.m. November 8 at the Lancaster Virginia Historical Society, 8346 Mary Ball Road, Lancaster. The menu will include steamed and raw oysters, chicken stew, ham and bean soup, hot dogs, beer, wine and soda. Toby Calloway and Larry Heatwole will perform.

Tickets are $65 until October 18, or $70. Purchase tickets at lancastervahistory.org, 462-7280, or LVHS from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays.

Fall meeting

The Northumberland County Historical Society (NCHS) will hold its annual fall meeting at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, October 19, at the Ball Memorial Library and Museum, 86 Back Street, Heathsville.

Gregory Burkett will speak about the return of the Marquis de Lafayette to America in 1824. Light refreshments will be served following the lecture.

Washington’s  encampment

Stratford Hall, 483 Great House Road, Stratford, will host the First Oval Office Project, General George Washington’s Revolutionary War encampment, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, October 19.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for ages 6-13, and free for ages 5 and younger, Friends of Stratford members and Museums for All participants. Tickets are available at stratfordhall.org and the gate.

Floral Fantasies

The Kilmarnock Garden Club will host Floral Fantasies with Kathy Ward at 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 21, at Historic Christ Church in Weems. Ward will create Fall, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s floral fantasies.

Power of Pink

Bon Secours RGH will host Power of Pink, breast cancer awareness event, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 21, at White Stone Church of the Nazarene, 57 Whisk Drive, White Stone.

The free event will offer education, support, fellowship, food, door prizes, raffles and a special ceremony honoring breast cancer survivors. Registration is encouraged, call 435-8090 or 435-8325.

Post 86

American Legion Adams Post 86 will meet from noon-2 p.m. Tuesday, October 21, at Nacho Average Brew Pub, 44 West Church Street, Kilmarnock. The Post will cover the cost of the meal for members; others buy their own.

Guest speaker Gary Ryan of the Disabled American Veterans will address the services his organization can provide U.S. military veterans.

Genealogy classes

 The Lancaster Virginia Historical Society (LVHS)  Fall Genealogy Classes will continue from 1-3:30 p.m. October 23, 30 and November 6 at Lancaster Community Library, 16 Town Centre Drive, Kilmarnock. The October 23 topic will be Digging in the Dirt—All About Land Records; October 30, Have You Tried These? – Unknown and Lesser-Used Records; and November 6, Dead Men Do Tell Tales – Estate Records and Cemeteries..

The fee is $25 for LVHS members, $30 for others. Paid registration is required by 4 p.m. the day before each class. Register at lancastervahistory.org or 462-7280.

Candy for Kids

White Stone Candy for Kids will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Halloween, October 31, throughout the White Stone business district.

Families are invited to bring children in costumes downtown for trick-or-treating among participating decorated businesses as well as a trunk-or-treat event at the firehouse. Times may differ for trick-or-treating in residential areas.

Fall fun

Fall Family Fun Day will be held from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. November 1, at Stratford Hall Historic Preserve, 483 Great House Road, Stratford. Activities will include tractor wagon rides, take-home crafts, lawn games, scavenger hunts, pumpkin painting and even pumpkin bowling.

Admission is $5 for ages 6 and older and free for ages 5 and younger, Friends of Stratford members and Museums for All participants. Purchase tickets at stratfordhall.org, or the gate.

Marine Corps Birthday Ball

Marine Corps League Detachment 1062 will host a Marine Corps Birthday Ball at Indian Creek Yacht and Country Club at 5 p.m. November 7 to commemorate the 250th birthday of the Marine Corps.

Festivities will include cocktail hour, dinner, traditional cake cutting ceremony, music, dancing and remarks by retired USMC Sergeant Major Robin Fortner. For reservations, contact commandant Jim Schafer at 540-429-0371, or schaferjb@aol.com.

Rotary meetings

The Northern Neck Rotary Club meets at 7:30 a.m. on second and fourth Wednesdays at River Counties Community Foundation, 834 Rappahannock Drive, White. Those interested in the speaker topics or Rotary are welcome.
