Native plants
The Northern Neck Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society will meet at noon Thursday, November 21, in the Visitor Center at Belle Isle State Park, 1632 Belle Isle Road, Lancaster. Bring a lunch or snack. Drinks and light refreshments will be available.
Vice president Kevin Howe will present “Fungi and their Floral Partners.” Following the talk, he will lead a “Fungal Field Foray” on one of the park’s trails.
Piano quartet
The Rappahannock Concert Association will present The Garth Newel Piano Quartet at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, November 23, at the Northumberland County School Performing Arts Theater, 201 Academic Lane, Heathsville.
Admission is by season subscription $110; a pick-three subscription, $70; or a single concert ticket, $35. Purchase subscriptions or tickets at rappahannockconcerts.org, or at the door on concert night, cash or check only.
Beavers
Alison Zak, founder and executive director of the Human-Beaver Coexistence Fund (HBCF), will be the featured speaker at the Friends of Dragon Run general meeting at 7 p.m. November 24. The meeting will be held via Zoom, the link will be posted at DragonRun.org. A short FODR business meeting will precede the presentation.
History talk
Sawyer Hutson, of Ocean Products Research Inc., will speak at 7 p.m. December 6 at the Mathews Museum, 200 Main Street, Mathews. He will present details of the company’s 60-year history and role in the community as well as nationally.
Children’s shopping
Golden Village Christmas will be held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. December 7 at Rice’s Hotel/Hughlett’s Tavern, 73 Monument Place, Heathsville. This event offers gift shopping, decorative greenery, a bake sale, visits with Santa (11 a.m.-1 p.m.) and caroling.
Children have their own shopping area. For $2 a gift, Tavern “elves” help kids ages 4-11 select and wrap gifts. Call 580-3377 to make an appointment for children or grandchildren to shop.
Festival of Trees
The 27th annual Festival of Trees will be held at the Northern Neck Family YMCA at 6 p.m. December 7. Tickets are $75 each and can be purchased at https://www.ymcavp.org/fot or 435-0223.
Oysters & Oldies
The St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church 17th annual Oysters & Oldies Christmas oyster roast will be held from 12:30-3:30 p.m. December 7 at Roanoke Farm, 6108 Northumberland Highway, Heathsville.
Tickets are $45 and available at ststephensheathsville.org/oyster-roast or the St. Stephen’s Thrift Shop, 6852 Northumberland Highway, Heathsville.
Village Christmas
The Village of Weems will have its annual Christmas parade at 4:30 p.m. December 7 starting at the end of Weems Road.
The parade will be followed by a come as you are Nativity pageant at Campbell Memorial Church and a potluck dinner at 5:30 p.m.
Christmas Town
Palestine Lodge #100, Good Luck Road, Kilmarnock, will host Christmas Town at 3 p.m. December 8. The event will feature photos with Santa and The Grinch, music, games, toys and refreshments.
Chicken dinners
Chicken dinners will be available from 5-6:30 p.m. on first Mondays at American Legion Post #117, 39 School Street, Reedville.
Meals include fried chicken, mashed potatoes, choice of vegetables, salad, roll, dessert and drink. Dinners are $12 for adults and $6 for children ages 12 and younger, at the door.
House tour
The Urbanna Holiday Home Tour will be held from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. December 14. Tour sites will include the Middlesex County Woman’s Club, The Cottrell’s House, The Old Town Hall Building, The Quilter’s House and The Jessee’s House. Ticket options are offered from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and 1:30-4 p.m.

Christmas show
The Kilmarnock Museum recently announced a bus trip to the Old Dominion Barn Dance Christmas Show on December 14 to see Wilson Fairchild and Hunter Owens. A chartered coach will depart from Chesapeake Commons in Kilmarnock at 11:30 a.m. and return by 10 p.m. A nonrefundable $135 fee includes roundtrip fare, seats to the show and snacks on the bus.
The bus will stop for dinner on the return trip at Nick’s Spaghetti and Steak House in Shacklefords. Dinner is not included in the fee. To reserve a seat, call Mary Brent, 238-8738, or Ashburn, 296-0930. Cash or checks payable to Kilmarnock Museum is expected at time of booking.
Decorate Irvington
On December 15, judging will take place to choose the winners of the annual outdoor Christmas decorations contest for Irvington businesses and residences. Winners will be announced December 19.
Rotary
The Rotary Club of the Northern Neck meets for breakfast at 7:30 a.m. on second and fourth Wednesdays at River Counties Community Foundation, 834 Rappahannock Drive, White Stone. However, the November 27 meeting has been cancelled
Senior gathering
Irvington United Methodist Church, 26 King Carter Drive, Irvington, hosts a senior gathering from noon-1:30 p.m. on second Tuesdays. Share lunch, bingo and fellowship.
