Wash out: Heavy rainfall saturates area

The National Weather Service reported rainfall totals of 9.38 inches in the Kilmarnock area and 6.28 inches in the Heathsville area from 8 a.m. June 9 to 8 a.m. June 12. Numerous roads were closed in both Lancaster and Northumberland counties during the height of the storm Friday afternoon. The Virginia Department of Transportation reports several roads in Northumberland remain closed for repairs, including portions of Hampton Hall Road, Fallin Town Road, Valley Drive and Kissinger Spring Road (above). Several merchants in downtown Kilmarnock experienced flooding. One person had to be rescued from a car which was stuck in running water on Valley Drive in Gibeon, reported Northumberland County Chief of Emergency Services Wes Packett.
