West Point snuffs Northumberland, 46-42, to win regional boys semi-final

West Point held the Indians to single digit scoring in each of the second half quarters last Thursday to take a late-game lead and beat Northumberland, 46-42, for a berth in the Region 1A boys basketball championship.

With the semifinal win, West Point gained a shot at regional top seed and defending Group 1A state champion Mathews in this week’s final. The Blue Devils beat Charles City, 71-50, in the other regional semifinal. Charles City had advanced in the tournament with a play-in game win against Rappahannock, 57-44. Mathews was the first-place seed in the region and West Point second. Northumberland was ranked third.

For a while, it seemed the underdogs were going to pull off…
