Lancaster junior varsity itching for a win

by Lisa Hinton-Valdrighi

Xavier Sutton accounted for the only touchdown for Lancaster last week in a 36-8 loss to Essex in junior varsity football.

Sutton broke loose for an 82-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter for the Red Devils’ lone TD. Carlos Norris rushed for the two-point conversion.

Sutton is a jack-of-all-trades for coaches Shawn Lee and Mychal Laws. He plays running back, wide receiver, cornerback and is a sometimes quarterback. In fact, Sutton has scored all nine of the Devils’ touchdowns this season. Unfortunately, he’s out for the last two games of the year with a shoulder injury, said Lee.

The JV Devils are 0-5 on the season with only two chances left in games against Colonial Beach and Northumberland to find a win.

The team got off to a late practice start after a low turnout for summer camp. Some recruiting during the first week of school helped keep the program going, according to coach Shawn Lee.
