TOGA to present oyster gardening seminar April 13

The Tidewater Oyster Gardeners Association (TOGA) will deliver a free training seminar, OYS-101: Basic Oyster Gardening, covering how to grow oysters, from 10-11:30 a.m. April 13 at the Northumberland Public Library, 7204 Northumberland Highway, Heathsville.
Waterfront property owners will learn how to grow oysters from their piers or shore for non-commercial purposes, with a free shellfish growing permit from the Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC), reported TOGA master oyster gardener Dr. Richard J. Siciliano.

Virginia waterfront residents may legally grow oysters in their creek or river, even if the body of water is contaminated, said Dr. Siciliano. Oysters are natural filter feeders and can help restore the….
