Northumberland supervisors adjust local contribution for school budget

by Madison White Franks

HEATHSVILLE—Northumberland supervisors on May 24 approved local funding for the 2018-19 school budget.

District 4 supervisor Tommy Tomlin introduced a motion to appropriate $11,614,470, representing no change in the local contribution. There was no second; however, the motion passed 4-1 with support from District 1 supervisor Joseph Self, District 2 supervisor Richard Haynie, District 5 supervisor Ronnie Jett and Tomlin.

District 3 supervisor Jim Long voted against level funding because of wanting to fund the school at the requested local amount of $11,735,602, an increase of $121,132 from the current contribution, reported county administrator Luttrell Tadlock.

Including all local, state and federal revenues, the school board had proposed a total budget of $17,732,956 with a 4% salary increase for teachers.

The school board planned to meet at 3 p.m. May 29 to make adjustments to the proposed budget for next year.
