Boys & Girls Club implements creative summer reading program

Sandy Sperry introduces summer program students to the work of honeybees.

About 50 children, ages 6-9, are participating in the Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Neck’s summer program at Lancaster Primary School. A new summer reading program to help bridge the summer learning gap is now part of that experience.

Volunteers Maria Bradley, Pauli Dillard, Lynne Engstrom, Kara Johnson, Susan Ludeman, Kim Pate, Ginger Philbrick and Sandy Sperry are working with groups of six to eight children for 30-minute sessions three days each week. Activities include games related to beginning sounds and short and long vowel sounds as well as sight word activities such as Go Fish and Memory using these words.
