The “Great Kilmarnock Fire of ’52” brought scenes of total destruction at Main and Church streets in the Steptoe’s District of Kilmarnock. This photo was taken the morning after the March 17, 1952, fire that destroyed 12 buildings along an entire block of downtown. Fortunately there was only one injury and no deaths, according to Kilmarnock Museum president Carroll Lee Ashburn. Nine fire companies from the surrounding area and from as far away as Colonial Beach, Kinsale and Montross battled the blaze for hours. The museum has an extensive collection of fire photographs now on display, said Ashburn. “Do you remember?” is a public service of the Kilmarnock Museum.
