NHS students explore local waterways

Students and educators collect samples of marine life.

The Reedville Fishermen’s Museum and the Northumberland Association for Progressive Stewardship (NAPS) recently co-sponsored a canoe trip for Northumberland High School students on Friday, October 21.

Sixteen students in ninth grade environmental classes with Katelyn Orem and Nora Kennedy enjoyed a beautiful fall day exploring the creeks around Belle Isle State Park. Chesapeake Bay Foundation educators led the learning experience.

“We had quite a few students that had never been on the water before or held aquatic critters, so this experience meant a lot to them,” said Orem.

Reedville Fishermen’s Museum’s educational program has taken flight this season, welcoming the sixth field trip in just four short months under the direction of executive director Shauna McCranie.
