
Rainbow carrots, sunflowers, zinnias and marigolds are growing in raised beds at the Northumberland Boys & Girls Club in Heathsville.
They were the top seed choices voted by the student Garden Club members this spring, reported NNMG communications chairman Karen Williams. The youth planted the seeds with the help of the Northern Neck Master Gardeners (NNMG) who led the Garden Club. They are growing other plants too, including onions, potatoes, herbs, strawberries, tomatoes, peppers and pumpkins.
During the Boys & Girls Club’s summer camp, the students attended weekly Garden Club meetings for six weeks. They tended the garden and learned about growing plants, said Williams. Fuzzy celosia flowers were planted in a large container to beautify their patio at the Club.
