IRVINGTON—Spiro James “JD” DeSon Jr., 76, of Irvington passed away on August 8, 2024, in Kilmarnock.
He was born on July 5, 1948, in Chicago, Illinois, to Spiro Sr. and Lillian Dossounis. His father moved the family to Southern California in 1950 where the family name was eventually shortened to DeSon in 1962.
JD grew up in Montebello, California, where he played high school football and earned a scholarship to play at the University of Colorado. He returned to California after the death of his father and would eventually graduate from Whitter College in California in 1974. He met his wife, Cynthia “Cindy”, while working at United California Bank and married in 1976. Their first and only son, Jason, was born in 1980.
JD always had a passion for golf and football. He remained a devout fan of the Chicago Bears and USC Trojan football. Before retiring, he refereed Pop Warner and high school football for over 20 years, managing to keep up with the young athletes up and down the gridiron well into his 60s.
Seeking to get away from crowded Southern California, JD and Cindy retired to Irvington in 2019. JD immediately took to the quiet beauty of the Northern Neck where he enjoyed watching the nature around him. He particularly adored Virginia’s own Northern Cardinal. JD also greatly enjoyed the hospitality and compassion of his extended family and new friends. Before he passed, he had planned to explore more of the local area and the rich history of the east coast.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Cindy; and his son, Jason.
Friends and family will be received beginning at 10 a.m., Friday, August 30, at Currie Funeral Home, 116 East Church Street, Kilmarnock, VA 22482 with mass to follow at 11 a.m. at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. Interment will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery in Kilmarnock.
