Community heroes to be honored October 8

Eighteen citizens will be recognized and honored for going above and beyond to save another’s life. The event will be held Tuesday, October 8, National Heroes Day, at Nacho Average Brewpub on West Church Street in Kilmarnock. The event will begin at 11 a.m.

Retired USMC Col. Harvey “Barney” Barnum, a Medal of Honor recipient, will award the heroes the Kilmarnock Museum’s Lifesaving Medal, reported Kilmarnock Museum president Carroll Lee Ashburn.

Sarah Chakales of NBC affiliate Channel 12 in Richmond will be the emcee. The event will be videoed to be shown later.

Honorees will include Special Agent Josh Hudson of the Virginia State Police; Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office deputies Chris Beuchelt, Jim Pearce (retired), Norman Sibley and Sgt. Irvin Brittingham and communications officer Julie Campbell; Kilmarnock Police Department Chief Cliff Dawson, Sgt. Jordan Russell and officers Richard Thomas and Daniel Brooks (retired) and Chelsi Blake, who will be honored twice.

Also, Kevin Wilkins of the Kilmarnock Volunteer Fire Department and civilians Neal Hoar, Bill Frost, Darvell Kelly, Jack Kitchen and Stanford Palmer and Tom Conkle (deceased).

This event is sponsored by Chesapeake Bank and other community merchants and friends. The event was arranged by the Kilmarnock Museum.
