Power of Pink
Bon Secours Rappahannock General Hospital (RGH) will celebrate the “Power of Pink” with a breast cancer awareness event from 5-7 p.m. today, October 17, at Irvington Baptist Church, 53 King Carter Drive, Irvington.
The event will include education, social networking, vendor resources, heavy hors d’oeuvres and door prizes. This event is free and open to the public. To register, call 435-8325.
Reach for the Stars
The 2024 Capt. William H. Knull Community Service Award winners will be recognized at Reach for the Stars on tonight, October 17, at the Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Neck, 517 North Main Street, Kilmarnock. Honorees will include Tonya Carter, Jack and Susan Moore and Dr. Bernard “Trey” Davis III.

History lecture
The Mathews VA250 Committee will host author Phillip Hamilton, PhD, at 7 p.m. today, October 17, at the Cobbs Creek Arts Center, 61 Cobbs Creek Lane, Mathews. The lecture is co-sponsored by the Mathews Historical Society and the Mathews Museum.
Hamilton will present “Life, Death and Victory in Revolutionary Virginia: George Washington, Henry Knox and the Yorktown Campaign,” discussing the little-known relationship among George and Martha Washington and Henry and Lucy Knox.
Native plants
The Northern Neck Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society will meet from noon-2 p.m. today, October 17, at the Lancaster Community Library, 16 Town Center Drive, Kilmarnock. Botanist Zach Bradford will present a program on the native orchids of the Northern Neck.
A short presentation on the October Plant of the Month and chapter announcements will precede Bradford’s talk, beginning at 12:30 p.m. Bring a brown bag lunch or snack and enjoy a social gathering with members and light refreshments while announcements are presented.
Corn maze
The Northern Neck Farm Museum/Luther Welch Agricultural Center, 12705 Northumberland Highway, Heathsville, will host a corn maze through October. The maze is open from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays and 1-4 p.m. Sundays.
The fee is $5 per person with a $20 maximum per family; ages 3 and younger are free. Closed-toe shoes are required.
Open Mic Night
Literacy Connect will sponsor Open Mic Night from 7-9 p.m. Friday, October 18, at the Lancaster Community Library, 16 Town Centre Drive, Kilmarnock. The theme will be “Someone Who Made A Difference in My Life.”

Fall festival
The Northern Neck Farm Museum/Luther Welch Agricultural Center, 12705 Northumberland Highway, Heathsville, will hold a fall festival from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, October 19.
The festival will feature exhibits, equipment, corn maze, hayrides, pumpkins, Master Gardeners community garden. Admission is $10, including corn maze; closed-toe shoes required.
Halloween festival
Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of the Rappahannock, 366 James Wharf Road, White Stone, will host an Old Fashion Kids Fall & Halloween Festival from 3-5 p.m. Saturday, October 19. The River Pal Puppets will entertain.
The event also will include bobbing for apples, a cake walk, games such as pin the nose on the jack-o-lantern, toss the bean bag, barrel train rides and a bounce house. There will be a special area for toddlers and young children in the scarecrow patch where they can play with small scarecrows, a sand box and a small ball pit. Costumes welcome.
On Stage
The Rappahannock Foundation for the Arts 2024-25 On Stage series will open at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, October 19, with Dancing Dream, an ABBA tribute band, at the Lancaster Elementary School Theater, 191 School Street, Kilmarnock.

Seafood boil
The Northern Neck Farm Museum/Luther Welch Agricultural Center, 12705 Northumberland Highway, Heathsville, will hold a seafood boil beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday, October 19.

Historical societies
The Northumberland County Historical Society (NCHS) and Lancaster Virginia Historical Society (LVHS) recently announced their upcoming meetings will both feature a presentation by author Susan Anthony-Tolbert, Ph.D., about her recent book, Almost in the Clouds! The Story of the Miskimon Fire Tower, Miskimon, Virginia.
Anthony-Tolbert will speak at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, October 20, at NCHS, 86 Back Street, Heathsville, followed by light refreshments. She also will speak during the LVHS annual meeting at 4 p.m. Tuesday, October 22, at Lancaster Community Library, 16 Town Centre Drive, Kilmarnock.
Potluck dinner
Bluff Point Community League will hold a potluck dinner on Monday, October 21, at 2505 Bluff Point Road, Kilmarnock. Social time will begin at 6 p.m.; dinner will follow at 6:30 p.m. All are welcome. Bring a dish to share.
Gordon Sheridan of Northern Neck Partners for Pets is the after-dinner speaker. He will talk about their goal to improve the health and well being of animals in the Northern Neck.
Boo Bash
Trunk or Treat Boo Bash will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, October 24, at the pavilion on the Rice’s Hotel/Hughlett’s Tavern campus, 73 Monument Place, Heathsville.
This county-sponsored event will include free Halloween candy, handed out from the trunks of vehicles, plus games, music, prizes, hot dogs and ghoulish surprises. Children should wear their Halloween costumes.
Benefit breakfast
The Northumberland Lions Club will serve a breakfast to benefit playground equipment at the Hometown Community Park in Callao from 8-10 a.m. October 26 at Bethany Baptist Church, 16256 Richmond Road, Callao.
The eat-in or take-out menu will offer a choice of pancakes, scrambled eggs, hash browns, grits, biscuits, sausage gravy, breakfast meats, coffee, orange juice, water and milk. The suggested donation is $15 per person, or $25 per family.
Oyster roast
Heathsville Masonic Lodge #109 A.F. & A.M. will hold an oyster roast from 2-5 p.m. October 26 at Cowart Seafood, 755 Lake Landing Drive, Lottsburg. The menu will include roasted oysters, hamburgers, hot dogs, bean soup and beverages.

Resources Family Fair
The Northumberland County Department of Social Services will hold its annual Resources Family Fun Fair “Spooky Edition” from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. October 26 at the Northumberland Family YMCA, 6348 Northumberland Highway, Heathsville.
This free event will offer a boxed lunch, a costume contest, video games, hay rides, pony rides, bounce houses and door prizes. Celebrate Halloween and learn about community resources.
Barbecue dinner
The Rice’s Hotel/Hughlett’s Tavern, 73 Monument Place, Heathsville, will hold a Take-out Barbecue Dinner from 4-6 p.m. October 27. Tavern member Sid Mace, a certified North Carolina BBQ Master, will make pulled pork, barbecue sauce and “Jack Daniels” baked beans. The meal also comes with Tavern-made potato salad and coleslaw, a bun and brownies.

Marine Corps Birthday Ball
The Marine Corps League Detachment 1062 will commemorate the 249th birthday of the Marine Corps with a Marine Corps Birthday Ball at Indian Creek Yacht and Country Club November 8. The guest speaker will be retired U.S. Marine Corps Major General Mike E. Ennis.

English Tea
Tickets are available for the Friends of the Library English Tea from 3-5 p.m. November 3 at Northumberland Public Library, 7204 Northumberland Highway, Heathsville.
The menu will include tea service with milk or lemon, homemade scones with cream, egg sandwiches, cucumber sandwiches and sweets. Tickets are $25 and may be purchased at the library.
Chamber concert
The Northern Neck Orchestra’s chamber music concert series will continue on November 10 at Grace Episcopal Church, 303 South Main Street in Kilmarnock. Tickets are $35 and may be purchased at www.northernneckorchestra.org or the door.
The concert of music for violin and piano will begin at 2 p.m. and will highlight music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Igor Stravinsky, Bela Bartok and Edward Elgar.
Bay concert
Concerts by the Bay will present Kate Voss and the Hot Sauce at 3 p.m. November 17, at the Harry M. Ward Auditorium, Mathews High School, 9889 Buckley Hall Road, Mathews. Admission is by subscription, or $30 at the door; students free.
Senior gathering
Irvington United Methodist Church, 26 King Carter Drive, Irvington, hosts a senior gathering from noon-1:30 p.m. on second Tuesdays. Share lunch, bingo and fellowship.
Chicken dinners
Chicken dinners will be available from 5-6:30 p.m. on first Mondays at American Legion Post #117, 39 School Street, Reedville.
Meals include fried chicken, mashed potatoes, choice of vegetables, salad, roll, dessert and drink. Dinners are $12 for adults and $6 for children ages 12 and younger, at the door.
Christmas show
The Kilmarnock Museum recently announced a bus trip to the Old Dominion Barn Dance Christmas Show on December 14 to see Wilson Fairchild and Hunter Owens. A chartered coach will depart from Chesapeake Commons in Kilmarnock at 11:30 a.m. and return by 10 p.m. A nonrefundable $135 fee includes roundtrip fare, seats to the show and snacks on the bus.
The bus will stop for dinner on the return trip at Nick’s Spaghetti and Steak House in Shacklefords. Dinner is not included in the fee. To reserve a seat, call Mary Brent, 238-8738, or Ashburn, 296-0930. Cash or checks payable to Kilmarnock Museum is expected at time of booking.
