Northumberland planning commission endorses boathouse on Cod Creek

HEATHSVILLE—The Northumberland planning commission on Thursday, November 21, voted 9-0 to recommend approval of a conditional use permit (CUP) for a boathouse on Cod Creek.

The request was made by Roger Evans to construct a boathouse at his property at 485 Clarke Lane in Heathsville.

Boathouses can be approved administratively as long as neighboring property owners do not object, according to county planner Stuart McKenzie. Since neighboring property owner Kimberly Reuter had objected, a CUP and public hearing were necessary, he said.

Reuter submitted written comments to the Virginia Marine Resources Commission objecting to the boathouse because it would “significantly obstruct and alter the view of not only the adjacent property owners but also property owners across and upstream of the narrow creek.”

Neighbor Rick Conway had “no objection to it….
