Lancaster schools see gains in literacy

WEEMS—Students in early grades are showing gains in literacy scores according to reports given at the Monday, December 9, Lancaster County School Board meeting.

Early Childhood Education Center (ECEC) coordinator Amanda Ambrose said the recently conducted Virginia Language & Literacy Screener (VALLS) showed nearly 73% of the four-year olds tested were “meeting or on-track for reading metrics.” She added that a majority of those students, 59%, were in the pre-K program last year. Half of the three-year-olds tested were “meeting or on-track” in reading.

At Lancaster Elementary School, principal Keegan Walters said the VALLS assessments for kindergarten through second grade showed that 34.72% of students were labeled high-risk for….
