Speakers relate experiences on the USS Eagle

The Steamboat Era Museum (SEM) on January 11 hosted two guest speakers.

Commander Greg Kirkbride presented “America’s Tall Ship – the Coast Guard Barque Eagle.” This was the first in the Second Saturday Speakers Series, reported museum manager Candee Pevahouse.

Justin Ailsworth explains laying out the sail material in a gym, the only area large enough to hold the sail.

Kirkbride spoke on the 88-year history of the Eagle, including characteristics, on-board operations and participation in the 1972 Operation Sail tall ships race in Europe.

The museum also hosted Justin Ailsworth, co-owner of Evolution Sailmaker. Ailsworth spoke about making the sails for the Eagle and his related sailing experience aboard the Eagle.

Ailsworth’s company also made the sails for other sailing vessels, including the Susan Constant.
