Centerpieces

The Lancaster Virginia Historical Society (LVHS) will hold its annual Holiday Greenery Centerpiece Sale from noon-4 p.m. Friday, December 12, and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, December 13 at the LVHS Museum, 8346 Mary Ball Road, Lancaster.

Arrangements featuring assorted fresh greens and decorative accents are all handcrafted by LVHS volunteers. There will be a variety of styles, sizes and prices for the centerpieces and other table-top items.

Dinner with Mrs. Claus

Children of all ages are invited to attend Dinner With Mrs. Claus from 5-7 p.m. Friday, December 12, at Northumberland Public Library, 7204 Northumberland Highway, Heathsville.

This free event will feature stories, songs and crafts. Children may come in their pajamas and they must be accompanied by an adult. Advance sign up is required. Register at www.nplibraryva.org or 580-5051.

Christmastide

Stratford Hall Historic Preserve, 483 Great House Road, Stratford, will celebrate Christmastide event from 4-7 p.m. December 13. Festivities include tours of the historic home, demonstrations, Colonial music, wagon rides and ornament crafts.

Christmastide tickets are $25 for ages 14 and older, $12 for ages 6-13 and free for ages 5 and younger as well as Friends of Stafford members. Tickets may be purchased at www.stratfordhall.org, or at the Visitor Center.

Freedman’s Bank

The Middle Peninsula African-American Genealogical and Historical Society will meet virtually at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 13. Historian Justene Hill Edwards will discuss her book, Savings and Trust: The Rise and Betrayal of the Freedman’s Bank.

Kings Return

The a cappella group Kings Return will present an On Stage concert December 13 at the Lancaster Elementary School Theater, 131 School Street, Kilmarnock. The concert, hosted by the Rappahannock Foundation for the Arts, will begin at 7:30 p.m. Doors will open at 7.

Admission is by season subscription or single tickets, $45 at 438-5555 or rappahannockfoundation.org, $50 at the door.

Casting call

The Lancaster Players has issued a casting call for Neil Simon’s “The Prisoner of Second Avenue.” Director Rebecca Tebbs Nunn will hold auditions from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, December 16, and Wednesday, December 17,  at The Playhouse, 361 Chesapeake Drive, White Stone, or call 435-3776 and leave a message.

The casting call is for two men and four women. Rehearsals will begin in January. Performances are slated for three weekends, beginning March 6.

Welcoming Winter

George Washington Birthplace National Monument, 1732 Popes Creek Road, Colonial Beach, will host  “Welcoming Winter: Rekindling Colonial Traditions” from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. December 20.

The event will feature blacksmiths, quilt work by artist-in-residence Rita Verroca, demonstrations by other textile artisans, and the Annual Holiday Ornament Hunt. Search for  hidden ornaments that reveal clues to a Christmas-themed riddle.

Paint party

The RAL Art Center, 19 North Main Street, Kilmarnock, will offer An Adult Paint Party: Holiday Highland Cozy Cow from 10 a.m.-noon on December 20. The instructor will be Juli Schuszler.

The fee is $50 for members and $55 for others. Register at ralartcenter.com.

Chicken dinners

Beginning Monday, January 5, the American Legion Post #117, 39 School Street, Reedville, fried chicken dinners will observe new hours, 4:30-6 p.m. on first Mondays.

The menu will include fried chicken, mashed potatoes, choice of vegetables, salad, roll, dessert and beverages. The fee is $12 for adults, $6 for ages 12 and younger, payable at the door.
