Allan H. Young

Allan H. Young

IRVINGTON—Allan Howard Young of Irvington, 87, passed away the morning of June 22, 2023, due to complications from congestive heart failure and Parkinson’s disease.

He had a long and distinguished federal career as an economist, which culminated in his appointment as director of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Economic Analysis. His expertise in economic analysis contributed greatly to efforts to measure the health and wellness of the country’s economy and global financial markets depended on the accuracy and transparency of his analyses.  After retiring from federal service, Allan lent his expertise to the International Monetary Fund by assisting the government of Malta to incorporate statistical standards and principles into their economic policies.

In retirement, Allan pursued lifelong passions for sailing on the Chesapeake Bay and woodworking. His boat, a Kenner Skipjack, the Wild Goose was well known on the bay where he sailed and taught generations of sailors. He was active in the Turkey Shoot Regatta for many years, and he was a member of Yankee Point and Rappahannock River yacht clubs. His hand-crafted furniture pieces are treasured by family and his love of sailing continues through his children and grandchildren.

Allan was born in Grand Rapids, Mich., on July 23, 1935, the son of Howard and Eunice (Beatty) Young.

He was predeceased by his parents and brothers, Donald and Cameron.

He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Victoria Marek Young, as well as his children Laura (Jon) Young Parks, David (Sinin) Young and Charles (Ann) Young and stepchildren Erin (Jun) Marek Yun, Christian (Jolene) Marek, Donna (Bob) Blagg, Scott Madison, Randolph Madison and Cathy (Lee) Madison; nine grandchildren, Ian Parks, Jack and Morgan Young, Laura and Sophia Young, Alex and Emma Yun, Christopher Wycoff and Rachel Liao; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces.

A burial service will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 29, at St. Frances De Sales Parish Church Cemetery, East Church Street in Kilmarnock.

The family wishes to thank Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury and all those who did such a wonderful job looking after Allan during his time at RWC and stay in assisted living and health care.  A memorial/reception, will take place at a later date at RWC.

Currie Funeral Home LLC of Kilmarnock handled the arrangements.
