KILMARNOCK—Barbara Lois Hydeman Barnes, 85, died May 18, 2023, after a short battle with pancreatic cancer.

She was born October 11, 1937, in San Diego, Calif., and spent her youth living all over the U.S. as the eldest daughter of the late Capt. Earl T. Hydeman (U.S. Navy, ret.) and Theora Rousseau Hydeman. She graduated from Norfolk Catholic High School in 1955 and received her bachelor’s from Miami University of Ohio in 1959.

She married Howard H. Amland in 1959 and they had six children.

Barbara spent her career as a devoted elementary school teacher in Norfolk Public Schools and Lancaster County Public Schools while also raising her six children with creativity and a lot of patience.

Barbara married Bill Barnes in 1983 and together they spent many years creating memories and lasting friendships in the Northern Neck.

She was an active member of St. Francis de Sales Church and especially treasured her Bible study group. She was also a lifelong learner who treasured books, music and animals. She spent many years playing piano or cantoring at her church homes in Virginia Beach and then Kilmarnock. She was an accomplished seamstress, avid birdwatcher and master list maker.

Barbara was predeceased by her husband, Willard S. “Bill” Barnes; and stepson, Willard S. Barnes Jr.

She is survived by her six children and two stepchildren, E. Howard Amland (Blythe) of Spokane, Wash., Ted J. and Ellen F. Amland of Columbus, Ohio, Michael R. Amland of Norfolk, Mary Theora Ives of Virginia Beach, William P. Amland (April) of Timonium, Md., Teresa A. Porath (RJ) of Annapolis, Md., and Paul E. Barnes of Richland, Wash.; 15 grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; her sister, Patricia Barry (Mike Ricci) of Rosemont, Minn,; three nephews; one niece; and nine great-nieces and nephews. Barbara also leaves behind beloved extended family Barbara Panchision, Paul and Crystal Housman, Kathy and Jim Wood, Susan Stallings and family, and Mary and Tim Caster.

A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 2, at St. Francis de Sales Roman Catholic Church, 154 East Church Street, Kilmarnock, with interment and reception immediately following.

Family will receive visitors from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, June 1, at Currie Funeral Home, 116 East Church Street, Kilmarnock.
