KILMARNOCK—Catherine Bristow Shirley, age 80, also known as Kay to her family and friends, passed away at home in Kilmarnock on June 2, 2023. She was born in Richmond on July 17, 1942, to the late Lewis Tyler Bristow and Ann Marie Davis Bristow.

Kay worked for the Virginia Farm Bureau as a member associate.  

Kay was a beloved member and deacon at Coan Baptist Church in Heathsville, for many years. She was devoted to both her church and community. Kay enjoyed her time that she spent at the beach and had a deep love for the water. But more than anything, she loved her family.  

Kay is survived by her beloved husband, Wellington H. Shirley Jr. of Kilmarnock; sons, W. Hill Shirley III (Karen) of Richmond and Lewis Bristow Shirley (Melissa) of Fort Myers, Fla.; daughter, Sara Tyler Shirley Blackwell (Keith) of Fort Myers; her grandchildren, Tyler Shirley (Scout) and Joshua Blackwell (Stefanie), Skylar Van De Bogart and Stevie Cobbs; great-grandson, Wells Shirley; and a special nephew, William Wade Thrift (Donna).  

Kay is preceded in death by her parents and sister, Ann Marie Bristow Thrift.  

A funeral service for Kay will take place at 11 a.m. at Coan Baptist Church on Friday, June 9 with Reverend Lee Farmer officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Coan Baptist Church Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 156, Heathsville, VA 22473.
