Chapman denied bond, trial will be set May 14

LANCASTER—Following a bond hearing Friday, April 30, in Lancaster County Circuit Court, Matthew Scott Chapman will continue to be held in the Middle Peninsula Regional Security Center in Saluda while awaiting trial in the shooting death of John Carter Gordon. A trial date will be set at a May 14 hearing. Previous trial dates have been continued due to COVID-19 restrictions and delays in acquiring evidence.

In denying bail, Judge R. Michael McKinney cited Chapman’s history of “finding ways to evade orders” of the court and “intimidating people to get his way.”

Chapman, 39, of Weems is charged with three felonies….
