Consistent hitting gives Lancaster winning edge in varsity sandlot action

Lancaster High School picked up wins over Westmoreland and Hermitage in varsity baseball last week and will end Northern Neck District play on the road today, May 9, at Colonial Beach.

The Red Devils cap regular season play Saturday, May 11, at Dream Fields against Arcadia. Lancaster is 11-5 overall and barring any major upsets will play in a district tournament semifinal Tuesday, May 14, against Northumberland. Rappahannock will play Essex. The championship will be Thursday, May 16, at the higher seed. The Devils are also ranked third in Region A with that tournament starting on May 23.

Lancaster scored four runs on three singles and a triple in the fourth inning to take the lead for good in a 10-2 win over Westmoreland on April 30.

The Eagles got on the board first with one run on a walk, steal and single in the bottom of the first but Lancaster answered in the second after a lead-off triple by Toni Thomas and a fielder’s choice by Pierson Long.

The Devils broke the tie in the fourth when Thomas hit a one-out single and stole second advancing to scoring position for an RBI triple by Long. Taylor Davis’ single put runners on the corners. Long stole home and….
