It may have taken 51 years, but Brookvale High School’s 1969 state baseball championship team has finally received well-deserved recognition from Lancaster County.
The board of supervisors, led by District 4 member Bill Lee, adopted a resolution on Thursday, September 24, 2020, recognizing the 1969 Brookvale High School Fighting Warriors baseball team “for their outstanding accomplishments attained that season culminating with a state championship.”
The 1969 Fighting Wolverines baseball team took a 7-2 record into the state tournament at Virginia State University in Petersburg. There they beat Central of Charlotte, 5-4, in the semifinal, and claimed the state Group II, District IV baseball championship, 11-5, over G.W. Watkins. |
“A group of men left this county with a mission—to win a championship. And they returned to this county as state baseball champions and their mission accomplished. There were no sirens, flags flying, or people standing on the side of the road waving. The only recognition they got was a blurb in the paper. Tonight, we are here to give them their just due,” said Lee.
