KILMARNOCK—Elizabeth Sharon Beatley Abbott, better known as Betty or Shirney, passed away peacefully at home on May 21, 2021. She was 77 years old, and a longtime resident of the town of Kilmarnock and lifetime resident of Lancaster County. She is reunited in heaven with her husband of almost 52 years, Wayne O. Abbott.
Betty is survived by her children, William W. Abbott (Blair) of Kilmarnock and Keri M. Abbott of Richmond. She is also survived by her grandchildren, William W. Abbott Jr. of Kilmarnock, Katelyn R. Abbott of Newport News and June E. Laffey of Richmond. She is also survived by one great-grandson, Kaden Z. Abbott of Kilmarnock.
Betty had a long, successful career with Northern Neck Insurance Co. in Irvington. She devoted her entire career there, retiring with 45 years of service in 2009. At the time of her retirement, she was vice president of claims.
She was a loving, caring and kind mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Betty is best known for being short but mighty, having an amazing shoe collection, loving a good pull on the slots and having an infectious laugh. She also loved to travel, was an avid reader and cherished all the holidays that would bring her family together. She is loved by many and will be missed dearly.
The family received visitors from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, at Currie Funeral Home in Kilmarnock.
