As the nation begins to make plans for the upcoming Semiquincentennial in 2026, Essex County will get an early start on the festivities July 13 with a special commemoration of one of the early steps on the road to the American Revolution.
The Essex Resolutions were one of many proclamations written by Virginia counties in support of Massachusetts after the events of the Boston Tea Party led to the oppressive Intolerable Acts. Drawn up in July of 1774, the Resolutions outlined the grievances of the colonists and reflected the growing anger over British abuses.
The Essex document is considered to be one of the better-written proclamations of that time, combined with the fact that Essex was the only Virginia county to offer staunch support for the Tea Party itself, proclaiming that “the spirited conduct of the town of Boston hath been serviceable to the cause of freedom.”
