The Northern Neck District was well-represented on the Class 1 all-state football team, released Tuesday, January 9, by the Virginia High School League.
Predictably, Galax, which edged Essex, 7-6, in the state championship, highlighted the honorees with senior running back Tedruhn Tucker named as the offensive player of the year and senior linebacker Austin Ashworth chosen as the defensive player of the year. Galax head coach Shane Allen is the Class 1 coach of the year.
As the state runner-up, Essex had three first team selections, including sophomore lineman Xzaviaa Bundy and senior linebacker Bryan Roane as first-team defensive picks and sophomore lineman Daniel Walker as an offensive selection.
The Trojans also named sophomore running back Jaden Holmes to the offensive second team and junior lineman Zion Darby and junior linebacker Avontre Johnson to the second team defense.
