Fatal shooting case will go to grand jury

HEATHSVILLE—Bobby Ray Landman III of Lottsburg, made an appearance in Northumberland County General District Court on Monday, June 3, for a preliminary hearing on charges of second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony related to the March 29 fatal shooting of Seth Dutton, 41, of Heathsville.

Judge Gordon Wilkins sent the case to a July 23 Northumberland County Circuit Court grand jury, saying there was enough evidence that a crime had been committed.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Jane Wrightson showed video of investigators interviewing Landman just a couple of hours after the shooting occurred. In the recording Landman, 21, said that Dutton “jumped me and I smacked him with the light,” adding that he “didn’t know if he had a gun or not. I just shot. I pointed it at him and told him not to come at me no more. I stepped back, closed my eyes and shot.”

According to witness Shawn Ellis, Landman’s cousin, and at whose Cedar Point residence Landman had been hanging out and drinking when the incident occurred, the shooting was the result of a claim by….
