Festival marks arrival of strawberry treats

Thousands attended the Strawberry Festival Saturday, May 28, at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Heathsville. The festival, which included 90 arts and crafts vendors, is one of the most popular and well-attended events in Northumberland County. Above, Sarah Kish covers homemade shortcake with a heaping scoop of strawberries and Carolyn Flowers finishes it off with whipped topping in the strawberry shortcake assembly line. Festival organizer Ellen Kirby said the festival received 1,000 quarts of strawberries to sell and purchased another 250 quarts to make 1,200 strawberry shortcake desserts.
