Irvington Planning Commission recommends accessory dwelling units for long-term rental housing

IRVINGTON—Irvington residents may soon be permitted to offer their accessory dwelling units (ADU) as long-term rental housing following a finalized consensus of what related ordinances should entail.

Commission member Steve Strait on Tuesday, July 2, led a discussion by summarizing how ADUs are defined by the town.

According to Strait, ADUs can be called accessory apartments, in-law suites and granny flats. They can be converted portions of existing homes, additions to homes, new stand-alone accessory structures or converted portions of existing stand-alone accessory structures, he said.

An ADU should be clearly subordinate to the principal dwelling unit on a lot and contain its own bathroom and cooking facilities….
