FLEETON—Janet Spriggs Lewis passed away on December 2, 2025, at her home in Fleeton surrounded by loving family members.
She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She shared an extraordinary partnership with her husband of 56 years, Dr. Emory Lewis, with whom she attended grade school and high school. Everyone who knew Janet appreciated her kindness, loving nature, gentle spirit, and devotion to her family, and she will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Janet was born on September 8, 1944, to Captain Morrison Spriggs and Lottie Whittaker. She grew up in Reedville and graduated from Northumberland High School. Janet continued her education at Mary Washington College and Johnston-Willis School of Nursing, graduating as a registered nurse in 1969. After marrying (then lieutenant) Emory Lewis in 1969, she worked as a nurse in Florida and Virginia, including at Emory’s medical office in Burgess.
Janet was a woman of strong faith and a devoted member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Fleeton. She served as a warden and a member of the altar guild and made quilts for cancer patients. An avid reader and gardener, Janet loved mystery books and was most happy working in her beautiful gardens, sewing, going on trips and spending time with her five grandchildren who adored her. She and Emory took in and helped raise several foster children.
Janet is survived by her husband, Dr. Emory Lewis; her son, Wallace Emory Lewis III (Tres) and his wife, Julie; son, Turner Lewis and his wife, Burns; five grandchildren, Emory and Taylor Lewis, and Morrison, Burns Scott and Wallis Lewis; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
A memorial service for Janet will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 21, at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Fleeton. Burial will be held privately by the family at Roseland Cemetery. The family plans to hold a larger Celebration of Life ceremony next spring or summer at their home on Fleeton Point.
Arrangements are in the care of Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock. Contributions in her name may be made to St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Fleeton, in lieu of flowers.
