Kathryn D. “Miss Kay” Mountcastle

Kathryn D. “Miss Kay” Mountcastle

PRESTON, MD—Kathryn Dobyns “Miss Kay” Mountcastle passed away peacefully on May 8, 2021, at the age of 94 at her home in Preston, Md. Kay was born March 5, 1927, in Washington, D.C., but grew up at the family home in Cherry Point (now Lottsburg).

She was preceded in death by her parents, Travers Mitchell Dobyns and Kathryn Harding Dobyns, and her loving husband, Dean Lamar “Bill” Mountcastle.

She is survived by her brother, Travers M. “Sonny” Dobyns Jr.; four children, Thomas “Tom” Mountcastle of Richmond, Kathryn “Kaki” Light of Lottsburg, Anne Johnson (Bob) of Easton, Md., and Susan Maxwell of Sherwood, Md.; her three grandsons, Christopher Maxwell (Amanda), Watkins “Watt” Mountcastle and Bailey Mountcastle (Sydney); her two granddaughters, Kathryn “Katie” Lynch (Kenny) and Amelia Maxwell; and three great-grandchildren, Gabriel, Claire and Adeline.

Kay attended and graduated from Callao High School and attended Longwood College for a short time before returning home to work as a medical assistant for Doctors Robert, Leonard and Motley Booker. It was there that she met and later married the love of her life, Bill Mountcastle. After living in Florida and Louisiana, they settled in Richmond to raise their family. In 1976, they moved to Maryland.

Miss Kay will always be remembered for her warm smile, her kind heart and her welcoming ways. She “adopted” many children along the way who, to this day, call her “mom.”  Known for her apple pie, love of birds and good conversation, she will be missed terribly by all of us.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 15, at Melrose United Methodist Church, 1317 Lewisetta Road, Lottsburg.

Our family would like to express our heartfelt thanks to Dickie Maxwell, her live-in caregiver, who took excellent care of her. We would also like to express our thanks to the wonderful staff of Compass Hospice for their compassionate care in her last days.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Melrose United Methodist Church Building Fund, P. O. Box 150, Lottsburg, VA 22511, or Compass Hospice, 160 Coursevall Drive, Centreville, MD 21617.
