TANGIER ISLAND—Kilmarnock Mayor Shawn Donahue visited Tangier Island on Monday, July 31, to discuss potential partnerships between the island and the Northern Neck with Mayor James “Ooker” Eskridge.
Donahue asked Eskridge about the ongoing erosion issue on the island and what needs to be done to protect the east shore of the island and ultimately the town.
According to Eskridge, much of the process for acquiring funds for protection of damages is still in the research phase.
Just a few years ago, a $3 million stone sea wall was built on the Western shore of the island.
“That took nearly 18 years to come to fruition,” between the planning and actual construction, said Eskridge.
Securing enough funding to build another seawall may be more difficult, as there is more area to cover on the eastern….
