Kilmarnock council reviews pedestrian and driver safety options for Steptoe’s District

KILMARNOCK—Prompted by a recent incident where a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle at a Main Street intersection, the Kilmarnock Town Council is focusing on pedestrian and driver safety.

Streets, sidewalks and playgrounds committee chairman Rebecca Nunn on Monday, September 16, said council has been working with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to implement a number of safety protocols and plan for future measures to enhance overall pedestrian and driver safety.

Council is pursuing:
• A speed limit reduction within the Steptoe’s District.
• Solar speed signs with reduced mile per hour messaging.
• New crosswalk markings in color, probably red.

According to town manager Susan Cockrell, VDOT has already committed to installing pedestrian lighted signage connected to the traffic signaling. This is the “walk/don’t walk” lighted signage….
