Plans begin for new park in Reedville; supervisors address other funding requests

HEATHSVILLE—Reedville Fisherman’s Museum executive director Shauna McCranie on Thursday, September 12, informed Northumberland supervisors the Greater Reedville Association had been gifted land by Helen M. Birkel near Festival Halle, “the last green space left on Main Street,” to establish a park.

When completed, the 2.3-acre Helen M. Birkel Watermen’s Park will include an event pavilion with public restrooms, as well as historical exhibits with the purpose “to preserve the maritime heritage of Reedville,” said McCranie.

Park committee chairman Kim Schmidt said the historical exhibits will include an installation on a Cinquack Native American fishing village, the Spirit of Reedville, and a spotter plane. “We would also like to incorporate a classroom since we don’t have space at the museum,” she said.

Bay Transit is also excited about the opportunity to install a bus shelter at the park, said Schmidt.

Supervisors unanimously approved a letter of support, 5-0, so the group could pursue grants….
