Lancaster claimed a second straight Region 1A championship over Middlesex last Saturday, earning the Red Devils a home berth in this week’s Class 1 quarterfinals where they begin their quest for a back-to-back state title.
Troy Henderson, who got off to a slower than normal start with five points in the first quarter, was unstoppable for the remainder, scoring 20 points in the second half to finish with a game-high 35 and lead Lancaster to a 66-51 win over the Chargers at LHS on February 24.
The game was reminiscent of last year’s regional final when the Devils beat Middlesex, 64-50, then went on to capture the state title.
“I’m very proud of how the boys played,” said LHS coach Dwayne Pinn. “It was a great game and the guys played like veterans. We came out in the third quarter with great aggression and our leaders took control of our team and brought us home.”
Lancaster led 14-6 after the first quarter but went shot-for-shot with the visiting Chargers in the second, allowing a quick five unanswered by MHS at one point for a 17-13 Middlesex run that saw the Devils leading by four, 27-23, at the half. The Chargers had come as close as two….
