LANCASTER—County schools are continuing efforts to improve literacy outcomes for students. Director of achievement and accountability Anna Kellum on Monday, June 9, reported to the school board on the latest updates to the division literacy plan as part of the Virginia Literacy Act passed in 2022.
Previously, the plan was for students in K-5. The state has now provided guidance for grades 6-8 and the local plan has been updated to include K-8, said Kellum. High quality instructional materials, as approved by the state, have been implemented in K-8 for both general education and special populations; for core instruction that all students receive, supplemental instruction that supports the core curriculum and interventions for students needing extra help.
Kellum said the plan calls for all teachers to be trained in the science of reading. “English language teachers 6-8 are in the process. They have until August 1 to….
