LHS freshman places fourth in Class 1 golf championship

Lancaster freshman Colby Sullivan shot an 8-over-par 80 at Pete Dye River Course at Virginia Tech last week to finish fourth in the Virginia High School League’s Class 1 championship.

Playing in his first state golf tournament, Sullivan, 15, was six over on the front nine then bogeyed his last two holes to shoot a two over on the back nine.

“I was extremely frustrated [after the front nine],” said Sullivan. “But I tried to settle down by taking in the scenery, the mountains and the fall colors. I just tried to calm myself down and play.”

Sullivan, who was the individual medalist of both the Northern Neck District and Region 1A tournaments and was the region’s golfer of the year, helped lead Lancaster to a team spot in the Class 1 state tourney. The Red Devils won the Region 1A tournament behind the play of four freshmen, including Sullivan, Ben Pittman, Eli Pittman and DJ Zeiler.
