Marines celebrating 250 years of legacy, sacrifice and spirit

Every November, when the air cools and the shadows lengthen, Marines of the past, present and those still dreaming of the title gather to honor a legacy carved in courage.

On Friday, November 7, the Marine Corps League Detachment 1062 filled the banquet hall at Indian Creek Yacht and Country Club with the proud echo of “Oorah,” saluting their fallen, embracing their brothers and sisters, and celebrating the unstoppable spirit that has defined the Marine Corps for 250 years.

Attending the local celebration for four years now, I’ve become accustomed to the many familiar faces that come to revel in the time-honored tradition. Commandant Jim Schafer greeting guests with the warmth of an old friend; Veteran Bill Penniman and his wife Judy laughing among those who know their journey; Alvin Lynn standing tall as the eldest Marine present….
