BOWIE, MD.—Matilda Beatrice Crosby Ball, formerly of Kilmarnock, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 9, 2018, at the home of her daughter Paula Fields in Bowie, Md.

Matilda was born April 5, 1930, in Kilmarnock to the late Eliza Crosby Nutt. She was raised by her mother and her stepfather, the late Raleigh Nutt Sr., and her grandmother, Ina Crosby Crocker in Ditchley.

She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Kilmarnock, where she organized the church’s original nurse’s unit. She also was affiliated with the usher ministry, missionary society, kitchen committee and church aid.

Matilda attended Jones Run School in Ditchley and Julius Rosenwald High School in Reedville, graduating in 1948. On February 22, 1952, she married the late William Osborne Ball, who preceded her in death on November 1, 1997. They were married for 45 years.

She was employed as a domestic worker, a nurse’s aide and a treatment aide.

Mrs. Ball is survived by her children, Paula Fields (Arnold) and William Michael Ball (Son); four sisters, Maxine Glover (Lawrence), Connie Scott, Estelle Scott and Barbara Hardy; five brothers, Raleigh Nutt Jr., Edgar Nutt (Earlene), William Nutt (Fannie), Stanley Nutt and Tyrone Nutt.

She also was preceded in death by her siblings George, Anthony, Larry and Jewell Nutt.

A homegoing service was held Friday, March 16, at Calvary Baptist Church. Interment followed in Calvary Memorial Cemetery.

Campbell Funeral Home of Kilmarnock handled the arrangements.
