The Lancaster High School boys basketball team hopes to make school and Northern Neck District history tonight by successfully defending its Class 1 state championship.
The Red Devils defeated Middlesex, 63-53, at New Kent on Friday, March 1, to earn the right to defend their state crown. Lancaster will play Auburn at 8 p.m., tonight, March 7, in the Virginia High School League Class 1 tournament final at the VCU Siegel Center in Richmond.
“Auburn is a well-coached team, fundamentally sound,” said LHS coach Dwayne Penn. “I think this is gonna be a game of execution and who controls the turnovers and rebounds the ball better. They’re the powerhouse out west and we’re the powerhouse in the east. Gonna have to be real solid on the defensive end.”
Auburn brings a 22-8 record into the state final and beat Honaker, 56-44, in a semifinal last week to earn a shot at the Devils. Lancaster is the 2022-23 Class 1 champion and comes into tonight’s state title game with a 25-2 record.
“Auburn is big, they are bigger than us….
