In a conversation led by Nancy Morgan of Point Heritage Development Consulting and August Carlino of Acorn Hill Strategies, some 40 community members gathered at Northumberland Public Library on Wednesday, March 6, to discuss plans for the Northern Neck National Heritage Area, which encompasses King George, Westmoreland, Richmond, Northumberland and Lancaster counties.
The public input session was part of a nearly two-year process of developing a management plan to present to the National Park Service, which heads the program. National Heritage Areas (NHA) are focused on areas of historic preservation, environmental stewardship, recreation, education, celebrating traditions and cultures, heritage tourism and economic development, said Morgan.
This first long-term plan extending through 2037, 15 years after the original designation, will focus on the themes of waterways, the Chesapeake landscape, American Indians of the Northern Neck, early American politics, marine industry, persistence of place and attitudes of independence.
